Lies I live by

By Lauren Sabel

Lauren Sabel’s latest book is out now. It offers a little of everything, spies, danger, romance of the complicated kind and secrecy at all costs.

As the government’s youngest psychic spy, Callie finds valuable information for top-secret missions without ever leaving the office. Her work is fascinating and keeps her headaches at bay, but it means she must lie to everyone she loves. She can’t move to New York with her boyfriend Charlie no matter how much he begs; he’ll never know the real Callie and that wouldn’t be fair to him. Besides, she has a job to do…

…and a new partner to do it with. Jasper’s psychic abilities are impressive, as is the way he keeps up with her witty remarks. Callie can’t help but flirt; Jasper knows her in a way Charlie never will.

But as her love life gets more complicated, so do her visions. People halfway around the world seem to be in danger…and people in her own backyard, too. When an oddball billionaire takes interest in Callie’s talents, it’s clear that if she can’t find a way to alter future events, she could lose the people she loves—and her mind. Literally.

The tragedy paper
By Elizabeth LaBan

Last year Tim Macbeth, was a seventeen-year-old albino who transferred to Irving School after struggling socially at his old school. His mother and step father were away so boarding at the school was the only option. It was a chance encounter on the plane where he met Vanessa, and a blizzard which left them alone for the night. It was there he began to fall in love. Turned out she was a student at his new school but involved with someone else. Thus begins a love triangle of sorts.
The school motto is “Enter here to be and find a friend.” Friends for Tim were hard to come by. All he could think about was Vanessa and his total infatuation with her.

This year, Duncan is a senior student who, as the school’s tradition goes, is left a “treasure” in his room by the previous student. Tim was that student and left Duncan a stack of CD’s. It isn’t long before Duncan is totally absorbed in listening to Tim’s story.
Each student in their senior year must write a Tragedy Paper and it is this and the CD’s that connect the two students, Tim and Duncan.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and just like Duncan, I wanted to hurry up reading so I could hear what Tim had to say. It is well written, flows smoothly between viewpoints and has impact. Great read.

Let the sky fall
Book 1
By Shannon Messenger

“A broken past and a divided future can’t stop the electric connection of two teens in this “charged and romantic”
(Becca Fitzpatrick), Lush novel.

This new series sounds great.
“Seventeen-year-old Vane Weston has no idea how he survived the category five tornado that killed his parents. And he has no idea if the beautiful, dark-haired girl who’s swept through his dreams every night since the storm is real. But he hopes she is.

Seventeen-year-old Audra is a sylph, an air elemental. She walks on the wind, can translate its alluring songs, and can even coax it into a weapon with a simple string of commands. She’s also a guardian—Vane’s guardian—and has sworn an oath to protect Vane at all costs. Even if it means sacrificing her own life.”

Seems the greatest danger may be their forbidden feelings for each other.
I predict this series will go far. Looking forward to getting my hands on a copy soon.

This is one for everyone who wants a break from vampires, dystopia and just wants a good read for fun.
The trailer could very well pass as a movie trailer for a young adult chick flick.

Night school
By C. J. Daugherty
Atom Books

I was recently given this book by a friend (thanks, Zac) and it is by my bed waiting to be read. Mind you that pile is almost as tall as me but I’m on holiday for a week at Easter so I hope to get stuck in and shrink the pile a little.
I’m intrigued that this book has twists that offer something different. After Allie Sheridan is arrested yet again, her despairing parents send her off the mysterious Cimmeria Academy. It doesn’t take long before Allie begins to suspect something is not quite right. Mystery, suspense and a little romance just for good luck.

        Free falling

        By Nicola Moriarty

Belinda and Andy are a young couple who have recently become engaged. They are happy and content with work, university and life.  Andy’s sudden death turns Belinda’s world upside down. His mother, Evelyn is also devastated but looking for someone to blame. In alternating chapters each woman tells their own story. Not only does this reveal insights to the two women, but also shows the passage of time and helps pace the story.

Grief makes people do strange things, like sky-jumping or shoplifting.  For Belinda and Evelyn their grief is raw and always at the surface waiting to bubble over. They haven’t seen each other since Andy’s funeral when Evelyn openly blamed Belinda for her son’s death.  Friends don’t know what to do or say and Belinda is now more alone than she has ever been before in her life. She is also convinced that her dead fiance is haunting her. Strange things are happening that leave her bewildered. How on earth does a car battery arrive from nowhere just when she needs one? Or flowers when she is feeling low. It just has to be Andy!  Her best friend, Stacey is a little obnoxious and even irritating but that adds flavour to the novel.

Free falling is not a pacy action novel but is instead a gentle story of overwhelming grief and loss. But it is much more than this. It is a story of hope.
