Axel & Theo : My dog is the Emperor of a faraway galaxy
By Amberly Kristen Clowe

Theodore Howard is pretty sure he won’t survive fourth grade and even more sure he won’t ever become the astronaut he wants to be when he is older. However, everything changes when he meets Axel, a very talkative weenie dog who just happens to be an alien from the planet Doglin. But nothing runs smoothly and Axel is kidnapped by two cats from the planet Catlat.
Humour and adventure await the readers of this middle grade book.
Enjoy the trailer – it’s good!

Phoenix
By S. F. Said

Illustrated by Dave McKean

“The supernova is coming … one boy alone can save the galaxy”

I confess I have not read any of S. F. Said’s books before but I am lining up for this one and I have already checked that the local library has it on order. I will be checking my local bookshops too as it is due out very soon. What attracted me first to this book was that it had been illustrated by the Dave McKean. I love his illustrations. They are at times dark, weird and wonderfully atmospheric. The trailer to this book is different to most and indeed stunning. The narrator has the voice of the old traditional storytellers. I just wanted to sit back and listen to the rest of the story.
I began reading the story here courtesy of Random House Children’s Publishers and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Lucky thinks he’s an ordinary Human boy. But one night, he dreams that the stars are singing – and wakes to find an uncontrollable power rising inside him.

Now he’s on the run, racing through space, searching for answers. In a galaxy at war, where Humans and Aliens are deadly enemies, the only people who can help him are an Alien starship crew – and an Alien warrior girl, with neon needles in her hair.

Together, they must find a way to save the galaxy. For Lucky is not the only one in danger. His destiny and the fate of the universe are connected in the most explosive way . . . ”

In the after
By Demitria Lunetta

“They hear the most silent of footsteps.
They are faster than anything you’ve ever seen.
And They won’t stop chasing you…until you are dead.”

Amy is watching TV when the world is attacked by Them. They are vile creatures which are devouring mankind so quickly that most of the population is overtaken. Somehow Amy manages to escape but as she does she finds and rescues a toddler. Together they struggle to survive and avoiding “Them” is difficult but deadly if they are caught. Eventually, as in years later, they are rescued by others and taken to a colony of survivors at New Hope which is inside a former government research compound. At first all seems too good to be true but the reality is something quite different. How will she save herself and keep the child with her safe?
The cover of this book alone gets a five out of five. Hanging out!

I often wonder how much money goes in to the production of book trailers and if the sales are worth the time, money and energy. The trailers I tend to watch and promote here would have me spend all my money buying books and this one is no exception. It is another quality trailer and yes – I want to go and read this book now! Unfortunately it isn’t out here yet but it is coming and I will be watching out for it.

Galaxy Zac

By Ray O’Ryan
Illustrated by Colin Jack

I am so looking forward to this series reaching New Zealand. It is ideal for those children just off the reading colour wheel and reading their first chapter books.

Read what Galaxy Zack says on his own site.

“It is the year 2120 and Zack Nelson and his family are making the big move from Earth to the planet Nebulon. Zack is already nervous about starting school and making new friends, but it only gets worse when he dreams that his classmates are slimy aliens with tentacles, pizza comes covered in gross bugs, and he can never communicate with his Earth friends again! When Zack arrives at Sprockets Academy for his first day of school, he meets and befriends Drake Tucker, a Nebulite boy who also loves to explore and learn about the planets. All of the differences between Earth and Nebulon begin to pile up and make Zack miss his home in Dubbsville, Texas, even more. But things start to look up when he receives a mysterious surprise. What could it possibly be? ”

These are the titles coming soon:
Hello Nebulon
Journey to Juno
Prehistoric planet
Monsters in space

This is definitely a series I will be looking to add to my school library. In fact I know just which set of boys will be lining up for them early.

I am number four
The Lorien Legacies
by Pittacus Lore

“There were nine of us who escaped… Three are dead. I am number four”

Loved this book. Not really a sci-fi fan but read this book in a day. The movie tralier looks different but most movies do stray a bit from the original text. Check out the book trailer first, read the book and then maybe see the movie. Aliens, war and a bit of romance.
